Do you know what is the basis of the performance of Econox Brabs?
The principle of operation of an oxygen sensor is based on the comparison of two partial pressures of oxygen in two separate gas environments. Zirconia, which represents the gauge element, has defects in its crystal structure, in other words, some sites that could be occupied by oxygen ions are free. At temperatures above 600°C, oxygen ions begin to migrate, which is a typical feature of these ceramic materials. Therefore, the measuring element becomes a conductor. The generated voltage indicates the relationship between the relative difference in oxygen concentration and the temperature of the heating atmosphere. To compare the partial pressures, the oxygen sensor must be supplied with a gas with a specified oxygen content (ambient air: 02% = 20.9%). This is what we call reference air. In addition, some Econox oxygen sensors are equipped with a thermocouple that allows the measurement of the actual temperature of the heating. Therefore, a user who knows the CO content through analysis or theoretical calculation and takes into account the values measured by Econox oxygen sensors, is able to determine the carbon potential (and oxygen concentration) in the heating atmosphere. The measuring element of an oxygen sensor has a limited life. Its surface layer depends on the pollutants in the heating atmosphere. Therefore, the measuring element must be replaced when its durability exceeds the permissible limits.
